Making a Difference

Nan Kitchens’ experience with Dengue 1 reminds us why the work of the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District is so important. Although mosquitoes seemed scarce around her home, she contracted a painful disease commonly known as “breakbone fever.” Her illness occurred during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, making the experience even more frightening.

Nan’s message, however, is one of gratitude. She described FKMCD’s response and care for her neighborhood and community as exemplary.

Her story shows that mosquito control is not simply about reducing a nuisance—it is about protecting lives and preventing disease. Every inspection, trap, laboratory test, service request, treatment, repair, and supporting task contributes to that mission.

Much of your work happens quietly, often under challenging conditions. Residents may not see the planning, monitoring, analysis, maintenance, and coordination behind our operations, but they benefit from your dedication every day.

Whether you serve in the field, laboratory, aviation, dispatch, administration, IT, maintenance, or another supporting role, your contribution is essential to protecting public health in Monroe County.
Nan’s testimony proves that your work is seen, appreciated, and making a meaningful difference. Thank you for your professionalism, teamwork, and continued commitment to our community.
